Lionel Messi inspired Inter Miami to their first victory at their new stadium, scoring one goal and providing a brilliant assist in a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers on Sunday.
Messi Inter Miami first win new stadium: The Argentine superstar opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, finishing off a slick team move involving Luis Suárez and Telasco Segovia before calmly sweeping the ball into the far corner from close range.
The 38-year-old Argentine icon dominated proceedings throughout, constantly troubling the Timbers’ defence and reminding fans of his enduring quality ahead of the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off in less than a month.
Messi then turned provider for Inter Miami’s second goal, linking up with Rodrigo De Paul and Suárez before weaving past multiple defenders and setting up German Berterame for a simple tap-in.
He came close to adding more goals in the second half, narrowly missing a curling effort from distance and later being denied by a superb late free-kick save from goalkeeper James Pantemis.
The match marked the fifth home game at the club’s new 27,000-capacity stadium, which had previously seen three draws and a dramatic collapse against Orlando City after leading 3-0.
Despite earlier struggles at home, the victory moved Inter Miami to the top of the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Nashville SC.
With the World Cup approaching in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Messi continues to build momentum as he prepares to potentially become the first player to feature in six editions of the tournament, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
