The FG provides land to support nationwide mass housing projects as it partners with credible investors to reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit. The government said it will allocate land across the country for affordable housing developments through public-private partnerships.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, announced the plan after meeting a Chinese delegation led by Chief Engineer Lewis Chima. The delegation proposed a partnership to build affordable homes across Nigeria.
Darma welcomed the investment proposal, saying it aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes affordable and sustainable housing for Nigerians.
The FG provides land to support nationwide mass housing projects by making land available in Abuja, states, and local government areas, subject to legal requirements. Darma said the initiative will strengthen the Renewed Hope Housing Programme and help reduce the country’s housing deficit.
Chima said the company chose Nigeria because of its large housing demand and economic potential. He noted that the country’s estimated 17 million housing deficit requires urgent large-scale investment.
He said the project will complement the Renewed Hope Housing Programme by delivering affordable, durable, and fast-to-build homes across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The company plans to use prefabricated construction technology under the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing model. The system combines design, financing, construction, and project delivery.
Chima said the company aims to complete 10,000 housing units within 30 months. The technology will reduce costs, improve quality, shorten delivery time, and attract international financing.
He also pledged a long-term partnership with the Federal Government, saying the project will create jobs, encourage technology transfer, and support sustainable urban development.
Following the presentation, Darma directed the ministry to establish a committee to review the proposal and recommend the next steps.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Shuaib Belgore assured the delegation that the ministry will continue supporting partnerships that speed up the delivery of affordable and quality housing.
Nigeria has an estimated housing deficit of about 17 million units. The Federal Government is addressing the challenge through the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which includes Renewed Hope Cities, Estates, and Social Housing Estates.
The ministry added that construction has started on more than 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including major projects in Abuja, Lagos, and Kano. The projects aim to increase access to affordable housing across Nigeria.
