The proposed Dangote Deep Seaport has received strong backing from Ogun Waterside Local Government. The council said the project will drive industrialisation, create jobs and transform the coastal area into a major maritime hub.
Executive Chairman AbdulGaniyu Odunnoiki gave the assurance during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the council secretariat.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Dangote Group, traditional rulers from the Ode Omi and Irokun kingdoms, community leaders and senior government officials.
Meanwhile, Odunnoiki praised the Federal Government and Ogun State Government for approving the Ode Omi and Irokun Free Trade Zone as the site for the proposed seaport.
He said the engagement would strengthen cooperation, promote peace and create a lasting framework for community development and industrial collaboration. Moreover, he said the project would boost the local economy and create opportunities for residents and future generations.
The chairman also urged residents and traditional rulers to promote unity. He stressed that peace and stability remain vital to long-term development.
In addition, Odunnoiki assured investors that the council would maintain a business-friendly environment. However, he said the local government would also protect the rights, traditions and welfare of host communities.
Speaking for the Dangote Group, Dr Sulaimon Ibrahim reaffirmed the company’s commitment to responsible investment. He also pledged stronger partnerships with host communities.
Ibrahim said the company would honour agreements reached with host communities. He added that affected persons would receive compensation based on established assessments and industry standards. According to him, sustainable operations require peace and mutual trust.
The meeting also focused on local participation. Hon. Samsideen Adekunle Lawal, who represents Ogun Waterside Constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly, urged the Dangote Group to prioritise qualified indigenes for technical and management positions.
He also called for regular engagement with traditional institutions and community leaders. Furthermore, stakeholders agreed to promote transparency, maintain communication and ensure peaceful cooperation throughout the project.
They also resolved to hold additional town hall meetings as development progresses.
The Dangote Deep Seaport is expected to boost Nigeria’s export capacity and support industrial growth within the Free Trade Zone. In addition, the project could strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major trade and logistics gateway in West Africa.
