Former US President Barack Obama has criticised President Donald Trump over the Iran war and rising consumer prices. Obama’s criticism of Trump came as he campaigned for Democratic candidates ahead of the US midterm elections.
Obama urged Americans to hold the Trump administration accountable for its policies. He also encouraged voters to focus on issues affecting their daily lives, including the cost of living and the impact of the conflict.
The former president questioned Trump’s decision to pursue military action against Iran. He argued that diplomatic efforts offered an alternative to war.
In his criticism of Trump over the Iran war, Obama also highlighted rising fuel costs and their impact on American households. He argued that the conflict had increased economic pressure on families. He also raised concerns about Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments.
Obama defended the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, which his administration negotiated. He argued that diplomacy helped limit Iran’s nuclear programme without military action. However, Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement in 2018.
Trump, meanwhile, defended his administration’s approach to the conflict. He expressed confidence that fuel prices would eventually fall and maintained that his policies could deliver a favourable outcome for the United States.
Obama also used his campaign appearances to support Democratic candidates in key races. His visits formed part of the party’s efforts to gain support ahead of the midterm elections.
The elections will determine control of the US Congress. Both parties are seeking to win seats and strengthen their influence over national policy.
