Nigeria Cannot Develop While Innocent Blood Flows, Obi Says on Plateau, Benue Killings

Peter Obi says Nigeria cannot develop while innocent blood flows. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election condemned the latest killings in Plateau and Benue states after fresh attacks claimed several lives.

Obi made the statement on his X account on Monday. He reacted to reports of renewed attacks that left many residents dead in both states.

The former Anambra State governor described the attacks as tragic. He cited the reported killing of at least 16 people in Otukpo-Nobi, Benue State, and nine members of one family, including a two-month-old baby, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Obi said Nigeria cannot develop while innocent blood flows because insecurity continues to threaten Plateau, Benue and many other communities. He warned that lasting progress remains impossible while citizens live in fear.

He said years of violence have forced families to mourn loved ones and flee their homes. Many farmers have abandoned their land, while repeated attacks have destroyed entire communities.

Obi described every Nigerian life as valuable. He urged the government to remember that each victim was a parent, child, breadwinner or future leader.

He also urged the government to move beyond routine condemnations. He called for intelligence-led security operations, faster response and the prosecution of those behind the attacks.

Obi expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and the governments of Benue and Plateau states. He urged Nigerians to unite against violence, insisting that peace and security remain essential for national development.
