The WAEC and NECO examination fees will increase to N50,000 from 2027 after the Federal Government approved an 82 per cent hike. Candidates will pay N22,500 more than the current fee of N27,500.
WAEC requested a review of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) registration fee for candidates writing the 2027 examinations. The government approved the request after considering the proposal.
The new fee marks an 82 per cent increase from the current N27,500, raising the cost by N22,500 for each candidate.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the WAEC and NECO examination fees approval in a June 18 statement signed by Director of Senior Secondary Education, Adeniji Ibrahim. The ministry said the decision followed a March 31, 2026 meeting between the Minister of Education and examination bodies.
The ministry said the minister directed WAEC and NECO to adopt a single examination fee for their Senior School Certificate Examinations.
According to the statement, the minister approved a new fee of N50,000 per candidate, which will take effect from the 2027 NECO SSCE (Internal) examination.

The ministry also instructed officials to notify all relevant stakeholders before the new fee takes effect.Confirming the decision, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, said the government had approved the increase.
Boriowo said she confirmed the approval after speaking with the ministry official responsible for the matter.
