The House of Representatives has demanded the rescue of 42 abducted Borno schoolchildren and urged security agencies to secure their immediate release. Lawmakers also called on the Federal Government to strengthen measures that protect schools across the country.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency, Midala Balami.
While presenting the motion, Balami said the Reps demand rescue of 42 abducted Borno schoolchildren because repeated attacks on schools and communities threaten education and national security. He stressed that all levels of government must protect pupils, students, teachers, and school communities.
Balami recalled previous mass abductions in Borno State, including the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping, many of whom remain missing. He also cited attacks on Ngoshe residents and communities along the Biu-Buratai Road.
He warned that recurring attacks continue to restrict access to education, endanger lives, traumatise families, and weaken public trust in government security efforts.
The lawmaker added that persistent insecurity has increased fear among residents and reduced school enrolment and attendance in vulnerable communities.
According to him, the situation highlights the need for coordinated action to secure schools, restore public confidence, and free all abducted victims.
Balami also noted that many communities now demand visible results instead of repeated assurances from government officials.
The Reps demand rescue of 42 abducted Borno schoolchildren amid continued attacks on schools in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions. Armed groups have repeatedly targeted students, teachers, and educational institutions despite efforts to improve security.
After adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Government and security agencies to take swift action to rescue the abducted pupils and other captives across the country.
Lawmakers also called for stronger security around schools through increased deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and effective rapid-response systems.
The House further supported the expansion of school protection measures, including early warning systems, community-based security initiatives, security awareness programmes, and improved surveillance facilities.
It mandated its Committees on National Security, Defence, Basic Education, and Legislative Compliance to engage security agencies and report on efforts to rescue abductees and improve school safety nationwide.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to develop and implement a comprehensive Safe Schools Security Framework to protect students, teachers, and educational institutions from future attacks.
Balami said the safety of children and the protection of education must remain a national priority, adding that government must act decisively to protect lives and property.
