FIFA Confirms Iran Will Play World Cup Matches in United States

FIFA Confirms Iran Will Play World Cup Matches in United StatesFIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play its matches in the United States during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting to rest growing speculation over the country’s participation.

Speaking at the opening of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Infantino reaffirmed FIFA’s stance despite geopolitical tensions and logistical concerns linked to ongoing unrest in the Middle East.

“Let me start by confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said. “And of course, Iran will play in the United States of America.”

Uncertainty Over ParticipationIran’s

involvement in the tournament had come under scrutiny following renewed conflict in the Middle East earlier this year. The situation raised concerns about travel logistics, security arrangements, and diplomatic relations, especially with matches set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

There had been calls from Iranian officials to relocate their group-stage matches to Mexico to avoid potential complications, but FIFA rejected the proposal, insisting on maintaining its original tournament schedule.

Political Undertones

The issue briefly escalated after Paolo Zampolli reportedly suggested that Italy could replace Iran at the tournament. However, the proposal was quickly dismissed by U.S. authorities.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later clarified that Iranian players would be granted entry into the country, easing fears that visa restrictions could prevent their participation.

Congress Absence Raises Eyebrows

Tensions were also evident ahead of the FIFA Congress, as Iran’s delegation was absent from the meeting in Canada. Reports indicated that officials from the Iranian football federation, including president Mehdi Taj, returned home following an incident with immigration authorities in Toronto.

Iranian media claimed the delegation was “insulted” at the airport, while Canadian officials maintained that individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are inadmissible under national regulations.

Group Stage Fixtures Confirmed

Iran are set to be based in Tucson, Arizona, for the tournament and will compete in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt.

Their opening match is scheduled for June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand, as they prepare to feature in the first-ever 48-team edition of the World Cup.
