Manchester United secured a spot in next season’s Champions League after a thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The hosts made a flying start, racing into a 2-0 lead within the opening 15 minutes thanks to early strikes from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško. However, Liverpool mounted a strong comeback in the second half, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo finding the net to restore parity.
Just as the game appeared to be slipping away, young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo stepped up with a decisive long-range finish to hand United all three points in a pulsating encounter.
The victory marks United’s return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-year absence and strengthens Michael Carrick’s case to remain in charge beyond this season. Since taking over in January, Carrick has overseen a significant turnaround in form, with Mainoo emerging as a key figure in the team’s resurgence.
Recently handed a new five-year deal, Mainoo capped off his week with a match-winning performance, continuing his impressive rise after previously being overlooked by Ruben Amorim.
The result leaves United in third place, six points clear of Liverpool, and guarantees a top-five finish. Despite the defeat—Liverpool’s 11th of the campaign—Arne Slot’s side remain on course for Champions League qualification, needing just three points from their final three matches.
Liverpool were hampered by the absence of key attackers Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak due to injuries, which United capitalized on early.
Cunha opened the scoring with a deflected strike off Alexis Mac Allister, leaving third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman with no chance as United set the tone for an electrifying contest.
