Mourinho Benfica Unbeaten Season Ends in Third-Place Finish as Porto Win Title

José Mourinho guided S.L. Benfica through a remarkable unbeaten league campaign, but despite the strong run, the season ended in disappointment as they finished third in the Primeira Liga and failed to win the title, making the “Mourinho Benfica unbeaten season” a rare feat that still fell short of securing the championship.

According to BBC Sport, Benfica wrapped up their season with a 3–1 victory over Estoril Praia, completing all 34 league matches without defeat. Their record stood at 23 wins and 11 draws.

Despite their strong run, the Mourinho Benfica unbeaten season ended with S.L. Benfica finishing on 80 points, behind champions FC Porto, who topped the table with 88 points, and second-placed Sporting CP, who recorded 82 points.

The outcome marks a rare scenario in European football: an unbeaten league season that does not end with the championship trophy. It also echoes Benfica’s 1977–78 campaign, when they went unbeaten but still lost the title to Porto on goal difference.

Attention has now shifted to Mourinho’s future, with reports linking him to a possible return to Real Madrid CF. Club president Florentino Pérez is said to be exploring a potential reunion.

Mourinho, who signed a two-year deal with Benfica last September, now faces growing speculation after a season defined by defensive strength but missed silverware.
