Atiku Signals Willingness to Back Consensus Candidate in ADC Coalition

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed readiness to support any consensus candidate that may emerge from the coalition forming around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.

Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television on Wednesday, Atiku addressed ongoing discussions about unity within the coalition and the process of selecting a presidential flagbearer.

He clarified that the priority for members of the alliance should not be about stepping aside, but rather about supporting whoever emerges through a credible process. According to him, the coalition’s preferred approach is to first seek a consensus candidate.

Atiku explained that if consensus proves difficult to achieve, the coalition would adopt a direct primary election to determine its candidate, adding that he would fully back whoever emerges from either process.

Reaffirming his stance, the former presidential candidate noted that consensus remains the coalition’s first option, stressing that unity is critical to its success. He further stated that he is willing to step aside for any eventual winner, regardless of who it may be.

When asked specifically whether that position would apply if Peter Obi is considered the stronger candidate, Atiku responded in the affirmative, saying he would support any contender who secures victory through the agreed process.
