Obasanjo Supports Obi Ticket After High-Profile Meeting With Kwankwaso

Obasanjo supports Obi ticket as fresh political moves ahead of the 2027 presidential election continue to attract attention. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Kano residence on Thursday, fueling speculation about his backing for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.

Several political observers believe the visit reflects Obasanjo’s continued support for Peter Obi and his interest in strengthening the party’s chances in the next presidential election.

Obasanjo publicly endorsed Obi’s presidential ambition during the 2023 general election, making his latest meeting with Kwankwaso a subject of renewed political debate.

Speaking on Trust Radio’s Hausa programme Matankadi, former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said Obasanjo supports Obi ticket and that the visit was linked to preparations for the 2027 election. He described Kwankwaso as a key political figure with a strong support base.

Obasanjo met with Kwankwaso alongside the party’s Kano governorship candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, confirmed the meeting. He said the visit allowed both leaders to exchange views but did not reveal details of their discussions.

Kwankwaso served as Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term from 2003 to 2007. Both leaders have maintained a close political relationship since then.
