Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has vowed to arrest those behind the deadly Gero community attack. The governor confirmed seven deaths in the incident, which occurred in Jos South Local Government Area. However, the Plateau State Police Command later reported six fatalities.
Mutfwang spoke on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed special advisers and honorary special advisers. The event took place at the New Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos.
The governor condemned the recurring attacks across Plateau State. He expressed sadness over Monday night’s violence in Gero, which left several residents dead. He also urged communities to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with timely information about suspicious activities.
Mutfwang vows to arrest Plateau attack masterminds as security agencies intensify efforts to track down the fleeing suspects. He stressed that residents must work with security operatives to prevent further violence and protect vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command confirmed that six people died in the attack. This revised the earlier figure of seven reported by community representatives.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said unidentified gunmen invaded Gero in the early hours of Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The attackers opened fire indiscriminately on residents.
Alabo said Commissioner of Police Ayodeji Faniyan immediately deployed mobile policemen and tactical operatives to the scene. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led the team.
The police worked alongside military personnel and Operation Rainbow operatives. Their joint operation forced the attackers to flee into a nearby hillside forest.
Authorities evacuated the victims’ bodies to a morgue. They also took an injured resident to hospital for treatment.
Alabo added that security operatives recovered motorcycles and other exhibits allegedly abandoned by the attackers. The police have intensified investigations to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The latest killings highlight the urgent need to strengthen security across Plateau State. Mutfwang and security agencies must ensure that those responsible face justice. They must also protect vulnerable communities, improve intelligence gathering and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
