Anioma State to Be Created with Asaba as Capital — Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that plans are underway for the creation of Anioma State, with Asaba proposed as its capital city.

Akpabio made this known during a recent address, where he highlighted ongoing discussions around state creation as part of efforts to address long-standing demands for equity and balanced development across Nigeria’s regions.

According to him, the proposed Anioma State, which is expected to be carved out of the present Delta State, will have Asaba as its administrative headquarters.

The Senate President noted that the move is aimed at giving the Anioma people a stronger political identity and improving governance at the grassroots level. He added that the process would follow constitutional procedures, including approvals by the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders.

The proposal for Anioma State has been a subject of agitation for years, particularly among the Anioma-speaking communities in Delta North Senatorial District, who have consistently called for greater representation and autonomy.

While the announcement has sparked excitement among supporters, political analysts say the creation of a new state would require widespread consultation, legislative backing, and a national consensus before it can become a reality.

Further developments are expected as the National Assembly continues deliberations on state creation proposals across the country.
