Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what he described as governance failure, citing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation announcement as an example of political accountability.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi said Starmer’s decision highlighted the need for leaders to take responsibility when they fail to meet public expectations.
Obi explained that he closely follows global politics to understand why some nations achieve progress while others struggle with governance and development.
Speaking on governance failure, Obi said Starmer chose to step down after facing public criticism over economic difficulties, rising living costs and unfulfilled campaign promises.
The former Anambra State governor compared the situation to Nigeria, recalling that Tinubu repeatedly asked former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign before the 2015 election because of insecurity and economic hardship.
Obi noted that Tinubu demanded Jonathan’s resignation after the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, arguing that the government had failed to protect citizens.
He also referenced Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promises, which included improving electricity supply, fighting corruption and enhancing citizens’ welfare.
According to Obi, Tinubu had challenged Nigerians not to re-elect him if he failed to fulfil those commitments.
The opposition leader argued that the country’s situation has worsened, citing poor electricity supply, growing insecurity, kidnappings and deepening economic hardship.
Obi further claimed that infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts have recorded setbacks under the current administration.
He therefore called for Tinubu’s resignation, insisting that governance failure should attract accountability in public office.
Obi said such a move would strengthen a culture of responsibility, reinforce public trust in leadership and help build a better future for Nigerians.
