Egypt secured a historic Egypt World Cup win after coming from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G clash at BC Place in Vancouver. Mohamed Salah scored once and provided an assist as the Pharaohs claimed their first World Cup victory in 92 years.
New Zealand took an early lead through Finn Surman, who headed home from a corner kick. The All Whites looked set for a famous result, but Egypt raised their level after the break and scored three goals within 24 minutes to turn the game around.
The Egypt World Cup win gathered momentum when Mostafa Zico headed in Mohamed Hany’s cross in the 58th minute. Salah then combined with Zico before firing into the bottom corner to put Egypt ahead. The Liverpool star later delivered a corner that Trezeguet headed home in the 82nd minute to seal the victory.
The defeat ended New Zealand’s five-match unbeaten World Cup run, which included four straight draws. However, the All Whites can still reach the knockout stage with a positive result against Belgium in their final group match.
Egypt also need at least a draw against Iran to secure their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde kept their qualification hopes alive with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Uruguay in Group H.
Kevin Pina scored Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup goal with a powerful long-range free-kick. Uruguay responded before halftime as Maxi Araujo equalised with a diving header and Agustin Canobbio added a second goal.
Helio Varela restored parity on the hour mark after intercepting a poor back pass and calmly finishing past the goalkeeper. Cape Verde then resisted late pressure from Uruguay to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
