The Nigeria 2027 elections will receive close attention from the United States, according to US Congressman Riley Moore. He said President Donald Trump’s administration will monitor how the elections are conducted and review the final results.
Moore, a Republican lawmaker from West Virginia, said Washington would pay close attention to the conduct of the polls. He made the statement during an interview with NoireTV, which was shared on the platform’s social media pages on Sunday.
Responding to a question about support for free and fair elections, Moore said the US would carefully watch how Nigeria conducts the voting process. He added that both he and the Trump administration would follow the elections closely.
The Nigeria 2027 elections also came up as Moore spoke about a proposed US bill on Nigeria. He said the bill includes strong measures on religious freedom and conditions for US security assistance to Nigeria.
Moore explained that the proposed legislation contains strict provisions on Nigeria’s relationship with the United States. He said it addresses the persecution of Christians and sets conditions before Nigeria can receive some US security support.
He added that the bill could soon become law and would shape future ties between both countries.
Moore also said he would continue discussing Nigeria-related issues with the Trump administration. He revealed he was scheduled to have dinner with President Trump and other lawmakers.Moore co-sponsored the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 with Congressman Chris Smith. The bill seeks regular reports to Congress on religious persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria.
The proposal also calls for reviews of Nigeria’s religious freedom record, US security assistance, sanctions, humanitarian support, and efforts to protect vulnerable communities and punish attackers.
Earlier this year, the US House Appropriations Committee approved funding conditions for Nigeria. The proposal would withhold 50 percent of some US assistance until Nigeria shows effective action against religious violence, supports investigations into attacks by Fulani militia groups, and helps displaced people return home.
