Tompolo urges calm as protesting women and youths occupying oil and gas facilities in Delta State’s Escravos and Warri river areas continue their demonstrations. He appealed for peace and urged protesters to avoid violence.
Tompolo made the appeal in a statement he personally signed and released on Wednesday. He asked protesters from various Ijaw communities to heed calls from Nigerians seeking a peaceful settlement of the dispute.
He also warned against allowing the protest to be hijacked by troublemakers and stressed the need to maintain peace throughout the agitation.
Tompolo urges calm and called on community leaders to meet immediately to discuss solutions and work together toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
He said the Ijaw people have a long history of peaceful conduct and should not abandon that tradition. He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the Warri Federal Constituency delineation report and help restore peace in the area.
The protests disrupted operations at major oil facilities, including the Kenyagbene (Abiteye) Flow Station and Otunana, Jon’s Creek Flow Station. Protesters demanded the implementation of INEC’s ward delineation report, saying it would guarantee fair political representation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demonstrators insisted they were pursuing their constitutional rights and vowed to continue the shutdown until INEC implements the report.
