President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a N100.5 billion reimbursement for Yobe State over the construction of the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport in Damaturu.
Tinubu made the request in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He asked lawmakers to approve the issuance of a promissory note through the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The president said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the arrangement. The council reached the decision during its second extraordinary meeting on May 23, 2023.
The approval covered the federal government’s takeover of the airport and repayment of its construction cost. Tinubu is seeking Senate approval for the N100.5 billion reimbursement for Yobe State through a promissory note programme.
The Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport is located in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital. The facility aims to improve cargo transportation and strengthen connectivity. It could also support trade and economic activities in the state.
If the Senate approves the request, the government can proceed with the proposed reimbursement arrangement. The payment would compensate Yobe State for the money it spent on the airport’s construction.
