President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the State Police Implementation Committee to draft the legal framework for introducing state police across Nigeria.
Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, inaugurated the committee on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The inauguration followed the National Assembly’s passage of the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill, 2026. The amendment proposes a dual policing system made up of the Federal Police Service and 36 State Police Services.
The President said the State Police Implementation Committee would prepare the National Policing Bill, which will provide the legal framework for implementing state police. He explained that the constitutional amendment only creates the structure, while the new bill will make the system operational.
Tinubu said the bill would cover key areas, including minimum policing standards, state readiness certification, federal-state coordination, accountability, human rights protection, and funding requirements.
Gbajabiamila will chair the committee. Other members include the Attorney-General of the Federation, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Chairman of the NGF Committee on State Police.
