The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the removal of INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, accusing the electoral body of working towards a plan that could leave President Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate in 2027.
At a press conference on Thursday, April 2, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, criticized INEC’s recent actions, saying the commission had lost credibility and acted outside the law following its decision to withdraw recognition of the party’s leadership.
On Wednesday, INEC announced it had delisted several top ADC officials, including David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola. The commission, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, explained that the move was based on a court order instructing it to maintain the status quo until the case is resolved.
Responding to the development, Mark addressed Nigerians both at home and abroad, as well as President Tinubu, questioning the need to weaken opposition parties despite the APC’s strong control of the National Assembly and majority of state governors. He challenged the President to allow a free, fair, and transparent electoral process if he is confident in his performance.
Mark also warned that INEC’s decision could have serious consequences, noting that it undermines the ADC’s ability to participate effectively in upcoming elections in Osun and Ekiti states later this year.
