Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Six INEC Commissioners Ahead of Elections

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm six nominees for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), including four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners.

A statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Senate would screen all six nominees.

The nominees include Prof. Mustapha Aliu from the North-West, who will replace Prof. Abdullahi Zuru. Bashir Umar from the North-Central will replace Prof. Muhammad Adamu.

Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, a current resident electoral commissioner in Osun State, will represent the South-West as a national commissioner. Tinubu’s INEC commissioner nominations also include two resident electoral commissioners.

Babalola will replace Prof. Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.

The two resident electoral commissioner nominees are Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi.

Akinleye, a retired permanent secretary, will represent Ekiti State. Sanusi, from Jigawa State, will replace Prof. Saidu Ahmed Babura.

The Senate will screen the nominees before deciding whether to confirm their appointments.

INEC oversees elections in Nigeria, registers voters and political parties, and supervises electoral activities nationwide.

The appointments come as Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections. The nominees’ confirmation will determine when they can assume their respective positions.
